Some common misconceptions exposed. Water-cooling is not required in a diesel. WRONG! All factory turbo-charged 4WD vehicles employ watercooled turbo units for increased reliability and instant shutdown ability. Don't be fooled by others selling older style, cheaper, non-watercooled turbos! Don't run too much boost. No more than 6 or 7 PSI! WRONG! Diesels already have a strong bottom-end coping with 500 PSI engine compression. Low boost in diesel engines is classified as 10 to 11 PSI and high boost is classified as 16 to 18 PSI. The lower the boost the richer the mixture. The richer the mixture the hotter the engine temperatures. Don't turbo it over 40,000 km old. WRONG! A diesel engine is not even run in at that mileage. We have turbocharged 4WD diesels older than 300,000 km (this is young in diesel terms). A mate of mine had his engine blown up by the turbo! WRONG! Turbo-chargers are the innocent party when there is a problem. The turbocharger is only supplying air to the equation, it's the fuel that generates the heat. The fuel injection system set up incorrectly, or a faulty cooling system, is the cause of the problems associated with turbo-charging.
