And you thought that Berrima Diesel had strayed off the path and fallen behind with the introduction of EFI diesels into Australia.

Quietly, though, this so called 'New Generation Diesel Technology' was already 'old hat' in the Berrima Diesel camp and quietly behind the scenes Berrima have been developing all the latest 'Fun' for diesel owners!

Berrima Diesel has been heavily involved in the 4WD scene for many years pioneering new tuning methods and technologies for Diesels.

Due to this fact, just on 10 years ago, they created a division of Berrima Diesel to better deal with market innovations for this scene and created AWD Technologies.

Over the past 10 years they have been quietly and actively developing and introducing a range of Diesel EFI tuning modules using technologies from at home and abroad.

It has been a very busy last few years for the team at Berrima as vehicle testing took place in a wide variety of conditions taking them from the heights of the NSW Alps, to the enormous Sand Dunes of Stockton Beach and then up North West NSW to the dry and dust out the "Back'o'Bourke".

This true 'Real World' testing, as everyone knows, cannot be simulated sitting on a rolling road dyno in a nice workshop!

Now people might think that these types of products might be for 'New Generation Diesels', as promoted by some, but the ideas and technologies have been around for many years.

Tuning Diesels until a few years ago in Australia was not extremely complex, when left to Experts such as Berrima Diesel, as mechanical systems were always adjustable in the final tuning stages.

With ever toughening laws on vehicle emissions came the introduction of EFI Diesel Engine Management. Due to this, new means were sought for accessing the computer mapping for engine tuning by Berrima.

Berrima have a unique plug and play system that can increase power and torque in all EFI Diesel engines.

Called the DPChip, the system, once wired in, is a plug-in black box which is completely sealed for protection and durability and if you're towing or load-hauling or just after having extra power, it could be the answer to your prayers for more grunt.

The DPChip fits neatly under the dash of the vehicle and is claimed to increase power and torque by up to 35% percent depending on the application.

The DPChip works by use of a clever interplay with the original EFI mapping to alter things such as fuel loadings and injection timing of the fuel system.

Contrary to what has been said by one company marketing Electronic units, the DPChip alters timing as well as fuel loadings, but it is not injection timing that increases engine temperatures as adversely as over fuelling a diesel!

As we all know... more fuel on the fire means more heat! So it is the correct setting up of the fuel loadings that has major effects on engine combustion temperatures and we have proven this over many years in the Diesel Industry!

Initial Installation takes between 30 to 60 minutes but once fitted the DPChip can be unplugged and plugged-in in a matter of seconds to revert the vehicle from modified back to standard.

Sound too good to be true? Well it isn't.

According to AWD Technologies boss Andrew Leimroth, this is a product that the buyer can get a benefit from every time he or she uses the vehicle:

"The DPChip is not like most accessories that you only get benefit from part of the time. Every time you use your vehicle, you are getting the benefit of the DPChip.

The DPChip also has other benefits through the unit's portability. It's very important to be able to simply plug the unit into the vehicle or out of the vehicle if you're selling it.

It takes a matter of seconds to unplug it so you don't lose your investment. Even for Diesel EFI fault diagnosis it again only takes a matter of seconds to unplug, and then the vehicles system is back to standard ready for any factory testing.

One major consideration to remember with the DPChip is its Universal Internal ECU (brain for short).

This was a consideration in the design and due to this the DPChip is probably the only system that can truly be taken between different brands of vehicles.

The DPChip can be reinstalled by and re-mapped to suit! This means True 'Plug n' Play' portability!

Once installed on a Diesel the power gain is noticeable from Idle to Redline. The increase in torque is a consistent average of 20% gain over standard throughout the rev range. Even at 1000RPM!

As far as fuel economy goes, there may be some benefits where someone is towing and maintaining a constant speed; the lack of gear changes and raising and lowering the revs will give some economy bonus but it's the drivability that's the big difference.

"Even though we regularly get 10% benefits in fuel economy there are a lot of variables outside the vehicle that can change this." says Andrew.

The DPChip has benefits off-road as well, especially where momentum needs to be maintained such as sand and mud. It will also assist where constant low-rpm torque is required such as long and steep uphill gradients.

In the final word, we have got to say that the DPChip really is a True 'Plug n' Play' performance module for EFI Diesels.

It is not just a hot chip that 'cranks' things up, but a unit specifically designed and programmed to assist the original EFI injection system in delivering the 'goods' at the correct volume, time and place.

In particular it gives a significant boost to performance, especially down low, and it doesn't cost the earth.
